Atopic outbreaks or "flare-ups" are caused by an overreaction to certain allergens that your dog’s immune system sees as "invaders" that need to be eliminated. This leads to the aggravating itchiness that causes your dog to scratch, lick, chew and gnaw for hours on end.
The most common allergens in the home environment are dust mites, molds and cigarette smoke. These as well as other allergens (wool, human dander, etc.) can often be reduced or avoided with these easy techniques:
1. Throw away foam or stuffed dog beds that are older than one year. Dog beds are one of the most common sources for household dust mites.
2. Wash all bedding once a week in hot water.
3. Do not allow anyone to smoke in your home.
4. Use a HEPA filter to clean the air.
5. Dehumidify the home to help prevent house dust mites, mold growth and flea infestation.
6. Use some of the household treatments that are now available to remove dust mites from carpets, bedding and upholstery.
7. Bathe your pet regularly with antimicrobial shampoo to wash off any allergens and prevent secondary infections caused by bacteria or yeast.
8. Keep your pet on a monthly flea control program recommended by your veterinarian. Dogs with atopic dermatitis can be very sensitive to fleabites too.

As with all drugs, some side effects may occur. In a field study, the most common side effects were gastrointestinal signs. Gingival hyperplasia and papillomas may also occur during the initial dosing phase. ATOPICA is not for use in reproducing dogs or dogs with a history of malignant neoplasia.
